The original European settlers to Tomball began arriving in the mid-1800s and discovered thick, lush forests around Spring Creek resembling the Black Forest of Germany and prime property for a booming lumber industry. They also found the rich soil throughout the area perfect for farming and livestock. In the early 1900s, Thomas Ball, who Tomball is named after, turned the sleepy town into a vibrant rail center. In the 1930s, the Humble Oil Company, now known as Exxon, struck oil, earning Tomball the nickname of “Oiltown USA.”

Today, Tomball continues to be a vibrant, popular destination. Regardless of the season, you will find a long and interesting list of attractions, events and activities to suit nearly every age and interest. Begin your visits by stepping back in time when you visit the Tomball Museum Center. The center comprises a collection of historical buildings that provide a glimpse at what life was like for the town’s settlers in the mid-19th century. Browse the collection of antiques at the 1860 Griffin Memorial House, then get an up-close look at 1800s farm equipment at The Farm Museum. This living history museum includes a 19th-century Lutheran church, schoolhouse, fellowship hall and doctor’s office. Check out a collection of train memorabilia, art, antiques and a model railroad at Tomball’s railroad depot. The depot has a gazebo that is perfect for picnics, and it hosts some of Tomball’s major annual events, such as the Tomball German Heritage Festival and the Honky Tonk Festival. Savor a taste of Tomball at the weekly farmer’s market. Browse the stands for locally grown fruits and vegetables, homemade pastas and sauces, whole bean coffees, cold brew and fresh meats. Other goodies include ceramics, llama wool rugs, breads and soap. End your day listening to first-class musicians while enjoying delicious American-style food at Main Street Crossing, a live music venue located in Historic Downtown Tomball.

Tomball, Texas: Natural Beauty and World-Class Golfing

Known for its winding trails, scenic fishing lake and lush forest, Burroughs Park is a 320-acre nature area. In addition to the eight miles of hiking paths, the park has five playgrounds, picnic areas, dog park, observation deck and boardwalk. Visit Kleb Woods Nature Preserve, where you can hike, bird watch and discover local history. The park was once owned by descendants of Conrad Kleb, a German immigrant who settled in the area in the 1840s. The Kleb family’s home, guest home and 1901-built barn still stand and can be seen during a visit to the preserve. Theis Attaway Nature Center features a grass amphitheater, walking trail and pond with a walk-out pier, perfect for fishing or observing the park’s wildlife. Tomball is also home to some of the Houston area’s best golf courses, including Gleannloch Pines Golf Club, boasting gently sloping greens and towering trees reminiscent of idyllic courses in Ireland and Scotland. With its lush fairways and immaculate greens set within a dense forest of oak and pine trees, it’s no wonder High Meadow Ranch Golf Club was ranked the second-best public golf course in Houston by The Houston Chronicle.
